Drain clearing service

Quick answer: If one sink, tub or shower drains slowly, the blockage is usually close to that fixture: hair, soap scum, grease or a dirty stopper. Clean the stopper, then try a plunger or a hand snake. If several drains are slow at once, the toilet gurgles when a sink drains, or water backs up into the lowest fixture, the problem is further down, in the main line or the septic system, and needs a plumber. Skip chemical drain openers; EPA advises homes on septic to avoid them.

One slow drain or many?

That one question narrows the cause more than anything else.

Fixes to try on a single slow drain

  1. Clean the stopper and strainer. Bathroom sink and tub stoppers collect hair and soap scum. Pull the stopper, clean it, and clear what you can reach.
  2. Plunge. Use a cup plunger on sinks and tubs. Block the overflow opening with a wet rag so the pressure goes down the drain.
  3. Use a hand snake. A drain snake or a plastic hair removal tool pulls out what a plunger cannot.
  4. Flush with hot tap water. Hot water helps move soap scum and light grease. Use the hottest water from the tap rather than boiling water, which can soften plastic drain pipe.

Our step-by-step clogged drain guide covers each step in more detail.

Why to skip chemical drain openers

Chemical drain openers contain strong acids or lye that can cause serious burns. On septic, EPA warns that chemicals poured down drains can kill the bacteria that treat waste in the tank, and advises using a drain snake instead of chemical drain openers.

When a slow drain means a bigger problem

Call a plumber when:

  • Several drains are slow at the same time.
  • Toilets gurgle or bubble when sinks or the washer drain.
  • Water backs up into a tub, shower or floor drain.
  • A drain keeps slowing down again soon after you clear it.
  • You smell sewage inside or outside the house.

These usually point to a blockage in the main line from tree roots, grease buildup or a damaged pipe, or to a septic problem. A sewer camera inspection shows what is in the line before anyone decides how to clear it. If you are on septic, our guides to septic warning signs and drain field trouble cover what to look for outside.

How to keep drains flowing

These habits come from EPA's septic care guidance, and they help homes on sewer too:

  • Keep grease out. Let cooking grease cool and put it in the trash instead of the drain. Grease hardens in pipes.
  • Only toilet paper in the toilet. Wipes, paper towels and other products can clog pipes.
  • Go easy on the garbage disposal. EPA notes that a disposal sends more solids down the drain, which on septic can clog the drain field.
  • Use strainers in kitchen sinks and hair catchers in showers and tubs, and empty them often.

Frequently asked questions

Why is only one drain slow?

A single slow drain almost always has a local clog near that fixture, often hair and soap scum in a bathroom or grease in the kitchen.

Why are all my drains slow?

When several fixtures slow down together, the blockage is usually in the main line, or on a septic property it may be the tank or drain field. That needs a plumber.

Are chemical drain cleaners safe?

They can cause serious burns, and EPA advises homes on septic to avoid them. A plunger or drain snake is safer.
