Roots, Slopes, and Winter Runoff
Redwood root systems do not respect pipe joints. Aptos hillside lots see recurring root intrusion in main lines, especially where downspouts have historically discharged near sewer or septic laterals. Winter storms push sediment into outdoor cleanouts and expose undersized drainage where canyon runoff crosses driveways.
Salt air is milder than Capitola but still affects exterior spigots and some tank components on bluff-adjacent streets. Combined with sandy and clay mixes depending on elevation, soil conditions change block by block, one reason percolation and drainfield performance vary sharply across Aptos.
