Chamber System

A drain field built with open-bottom plastic chambers instead of traditional pipe-and-gravel trenches to store and disperse effluent into native soil.

Also called: Leaching chamber, Plastic chamber drain field

What it means

Chamber systems use arched plastic units buried in trenches to hold effluent against the soil bottom. They replace traditional perforated pipe and stone while providing storage and equal contact area.

Chambers can shorten installation time and work on some sites with limited aggregate. The soil beneath the chamber still must meet percolation and separation requirements.

Why it matters in Santa Cruz County

Chamber fields are used on Santa Cruz County sites where gravel delivery is difficult or where designers want a larger infiltrative footprint on moderate slopes in Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley.

Homeowner tip

Never drive or store heavy equipment over chamber lines, because crushed chambers reduce treatment capacity.
