What it means
A drain field is a network of perforated pipes, chambers, or other dispersal media in approved soil. Effluent seeps through the biomat and unsaturated soil, where bacteria remove remaining contaminants.
Fields fail when soil becomes saturated, biomat clogs, roots invade lines, or hydraulic overload occurs. Symptoms include wet spots, odors, slow drains, and sewage backing up in the home.
