What it means
The water main is the first owned segment after the utility tap, typically running from the street to the house or from the meter pit to the building. It feeds all interior supply lines and must handle peak demand.
Main breaks show as flooding in yards, sudden pressure loss, or water meter spin with fixtures closed. Shutoff valves on either side of the meter isolate the building during repair.
Why it matters in Santa Cruz County
Older galvanized mains still serve some Santa Cruz and Live Oak homes, prone to internal rust and low flow. Earth movement on hillside lots can stress yard mains where they cross unimproved driveways.
Homeowner tip
If the meter dial moves with all fixtures off, shut off the main and call for leak detection.
