PRV

A valve that lowers street water pressure to a safe level for pipes, fixtures, and water heaters. Protects against leaks and appliance damage.

PRV

Also called: Pressure Reducing Valve, Pressure Regulator

What it means

A PRV, or pressure reducing valve, throttles incoming supply to a set downstream pressure, often 50 to 60 psi for residential use. High municipal pressure without a PRV stresses flex lines and causes water hammer.

PRVs wear out and may need adjustment or replacement when pressure creeps up or flow drops noticeably at multiple fixtures.

Why it matters in Santa Cruz County

Hillside neighborhoods in Scotts Valley and the Santa Cruz Mountains see higher main pressure than low-lying coastal zones. PRVs in garage supply lines protect tankless heaters sensitive to inlet pressure swings.

Homeowner tip

If banging pipes or dripping relief valves appear after the city upgrades mains, have your PRV checked.
