What it means
A gate valve uses a threaded stem to lift a metal gate out of the water path. Fully open, it offers low resistance, but partially open positions can vibrate and wear the gate.
Mineral buildup and disuse cause many older gate valves to break when forced. Plumbers often replace them with ball valves during repipes or water heater work.
Why it matters in Santa Cruz County
Pre-1980 Santa Cruz homes frequently have gate valves on street-side mains in cramped crawl spaces. Corrosion from coastal moisture makes these valves hard to find and operate during after-hours leaks in Live Oak.
Homeowner tip
If your main shutoff has a round wheel handle, test it carefully; consider upgrading before an emergency.
