Know the shutoffs
Locate the building main, water-heater shutoff, fixture stops, and any pump or well controls. Exercise serviceable valves periodically.
Watch water pressure
High pressure increases wear on supplies, valves, appliances, and water heaters. Low pressure may indicate a regulator, filter, service-line, valve, or supply problem.
Maintain the water heater
Follow the manufacturer's inspection and maintenance guidance. Watch for corrosion, relief-valve discharge, pan water, venting problems, error codes, and temperature changes.
Pay attention to drains

Recurring slow drains deserve diagnosis. Keep grease, wipes, and damaging chemicals out of the drainage system.
Inspect visible piping
Look for corrosion, staining, unsupported pipe, damp insulation, or mineral deposits around joints and valves.
Keep records
Save invoices, camera videos, equipment models, permits, and prior repair locations. Good history speeds up future diagnosis.
