Septic Glossary

Riser

A watertight vertical extension that brings one or more septic tank access lids up to or near the ground surface for safer inspection and pumping.

Riser

Also called: Tank riser, Access riser

What it means

Risers are watertight extensions sealed to tank openings with gaskets and screws. They reduce the need to dig up lids for every service visit and help inspectors verify liquid levels and baffles.

Proper risers include secure, child-safe covers rated for traffic where needed. Poor seals allow surface water into the tank, which adds hydraulic load.

Why it matters in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz County pumpers recommend risers on many mountain properties where deep burial and rocky soil make locating lids difficult without excavation.

Homeowner tip

Mark riser locations on your site sketch so service crews can pump without guessing in the yard.
