Septic Glossary

Effluent Filter

A removable screen at the septic tank outlet that blocks suspended solids from entering the drain field, pump chamber, or advanced treatment unit.

Effluent Filter

Also called: Outlet filter, Tank filter

What it means

An effluent filter fits in the outlet tee or chamber to trap particles that escape the tank. Filters reduce biomat clogging and extend drain field life when cleaned on schedule.

Neglected filters clog and can back up the tank or restrict flow to the field. Many counties encourage or require filters on new installations and repairs.

Why it matters in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz County often specifies effluent filters on new tanks and upgrades, especially where drain fields are downslope or near sensitive drainage courses.

Homeowner tip

Have the outlet filter cleaned whenever you pump the tank, or more often if you use a garbage disposal.
