Septic Glossary

Alternative Septic System

Any county-approved onsite wastewater design beyond a basic tank and gravity drain field, including mounds, aerobic units, sand filters, and dosing.

Alternative Septic System

Also called: Non-standard septic system

What it means

Alternative septic systems use engineered components to treat or disperse effluent where conventional trenches are not suitable. Examples include mound systems, pressure dosing, sand filters, and aerobic treatment units.

These designs follow stricter permitting, construction, and maintenance rules. They are chosen for tight lots, poor soils, high groundwater, or sensitive watersheds.

Why it matters in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz County Environmental Health reviews alternative systems throughout the county, especially in the mountains, along creeks, and on coastal bluffs where clay, rock, or shallow depth rule out standard leach lines.

Homeowner tip

Ask for the approved operation and maintenance manual when you buy a home with a non-conventional system.
