Advanced Treatment Unit

A septic component that treats wastewater beyond primary settling, producing cleaner effluent before it reaches soil dispersal or a treatment discharge point.

Also called: ATU, Secondary Treatment Unit

What it means

An advanced treatment unit adds a secondary treatment stage after the septic tank. Aerobic bacteria, filters, or other processes reduce organic matter, pathogens, and sometimes nutrients in the effluent.

These units are common where standard drain fields cannot meet local water quality goals. They require regular maintenance, electrical power, and monitoring to stay in compliance.

Why it matters in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz County often requires advanced treatment along the coast, near creeks, or on small lots with shallow or slow soils. Environmental Health may specify nitrogen-reducing or disinfecting units when a conventional system cannot meet setback or loading limits in places like Aptos, Live Oak, or the San Lorenzo Valley.
