Plumbing Glossary

PEX Pipe

Flexible plastic supply tubing joined by crimp or expansion fittings. Popular for repipes and long runs with fewer joints than rigid copper pipe.

PEX Pipe

Also called: Cross-Linked Polyethylene

What it means

PEX is flexible cross-linked polyethylene rated for hot and cold potable water. It resists freeze damage better than rigid copper in some installations and speeds repipes through attics and crawl spaces.

UV exposure degrades PEX, so outdoor use requires sleeving. Proper fittings and support spacing prevent sagging and noise from water hammer.

Why it matters in Santa Cruz County

Repipe projects across Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville often switch aging galvanized or pinhole copper to PEX. Hillside crawls with tight access favor PEX loops to water heaters in garages.

Homeowner tip

Do not leave PEX unprotected in direct sunlight on exterior routes; use insulation and UV shielding.
