Plumbing Glossary

Hard Water

Water with high dissolved calcium and magnesium that leaves scale on fixtures, showerheads, and heating elements while shortening appliance life.

Hard Water

Also called: Mineral-Rich Water

What it means

Hard water deposits white scale on faucets, showerheads, and heating elements. Over time, scale reduces efficiency in tank and tankless water heaters and clogs aerators.

Water softeners exchange hardness ions for sodium or potassium. Filtration and softening combinations are common where well water serves whole-house supply.

Why it matters in Santa Cruz County

Wells in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Bonny Doon often produce harder water than municipal supply along the coast. Scale buildup shows up quickly on tankless units in hillside homes without treatment.

Homeowner tip

White crust on showerheads and short hot water cycles are signs to test hardness before replacing the heater.
