What it means
An anode rod is a magnesium or aluminum rod suspended inside a storage water heater tank. It attracts corrosive elements in the water so the tank lining rusts more slowly.
When the rod is consumed, the tank itself begins to corrode. Most manufacturers recommend inspection every few years and replacement when heavily pitted or less than half intact.

Harder well water in the Santa Cruz Mountains and mineral-rich municipal supply along the coast shorten anode rod life. Many hillside homes in Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley rely on tank heaters in garages or closets where a failed rod shows up as rusty hot water.
