Plumbing Glossary

PVC Pipe

White or gray plastic pipe used for drain, waste, vent, and some cold-water applications. Lightweight and corrosion resistant in drainage systems.

PVC Pipe

Also called: Polyvinyl Chloride

What it means

PVC pipe for DWV systems uses solvent-welded joints and specific schedules rated for drainage temperatures, not hot supply unless marked otherwise. CPVC variants handle higher temperatures for hot water supply where permitted.

PVC becomes brittle with UV exposure, so exterior runs need protection. Transition couplings join PVC to cast iron, clay, or ABS at repair points.

Why it matters in Santa Cruz County

Remodels and additions across Watsonville and Freedom often tie new PVC drains into older clay street connections. Exterior vent pipes on coastal homes should be painted or sleeved to resist sun damage above the fog line.

Homeowner tip

Never use drain-grade PVC on hot water supply; confirm pipe labeling matches the intended use.
