Blackwater is heavily contaminated wastewater that carries human waste, food particles, and grease. It flows through sanitary sewer lines or a private septic system, never through greywater irrigation or storm drains.
Proper venting, traps, and cleanouts keep blackwater moving safely away from living spaces. Cross-connections between sewer and storm systems are a serious code violation.
Why it matters in Santa Cruz County
Older Santa Cruz properties near downtown and the Westside sometimes have aging clay sewer laterals that leak blackwater into soil during wet winters. Hillside homes with long sewer runs to the street are more vulnerable to root blockages that push sewage toward cleanouts.
